Pinocchio : A Whale of A Tale!
Community bonding and family loveNo man is an island! Through a contemporary adaptation of Carlo Collodi’s esteemed work, “Pinocchio”, we aim to shed lights on the values of integrity, courage and appreciation for loved ones and the community that one lives in. Our “Pinocchio” embodies the spirits of adventure and exploration, transporting our children on a journey of curiosity and fantasy!Environmental issuesThe inspiration sparked, when one gigantic sperm whale beached on Jurong Island on 10 July 2015. Jubilee, as she was named because she arrived in the year of our national Jubilee celebrations. Scientists found many plastic containers in her tummy and the cause of death was likely due to a big crash with boats, suggested by a missing vertebra. Thus, this musical was created! Murray Perahia Piano Masterclass
Observe and learn from one of the world’s most acclaimed concert pianists, Murray Perahia, as he works with talented young pianists from Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music.Don’t forget to buy your tickets to catch Murray Perahia in Recital at Esplanade Concert Hall on 8 Mar, Thu, 7.30pm.“The qualities that make Perahia one of today’s leading artists of the keyboard lie in his ability to shine a penetrating and personal light on such music, in such a way that there is nothing at all ‘standard’ about it. In other words, the commanding insights he brings to this repertory are more than enough to breathe freshness and distinction into works we’ve heard many times before, but seldom played at this inspired level.”– Chicago Tribune
Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s FEVER R...
TheatreWorks Curators Academy is thrilled to premiere FEVER ROOM, a projection-performance by internationally acclaimed filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul.Apichatpong Weerasethakul is the first South East Asian winner of the Palme d’Or, the highest prize awarded at the Cannes Film Festival, and one of the most original and exciting voices in contemporary art today.Featuring Jenjira Pongees (Jen) and Banlop Lomnoi (ltt), who also appeared in his critically acclaimed Cemetery of Splendour, Apichatpong fuses his memories with the actors' and fictionalises the narrative. Jen is a housewife lying in hospital waiting for an operation. Itt is a soldier, an inhabitant of a country deprived of light, and who is in a state of slumber. They cross paths in their dreams where people take refuge while their land is on a brink of collapse, echoing Apichatpong’s perspective on Thailand's present state of military dictatorship.FEVER ROOM presents a theatrical experience that takes us far beyond the frontiers of cinema, and plunges us deep into the filmmaker’s dream-like universe. It blurs the lines of reality and fantasy, obscurity and illumination, bringing audiences on a multi-sensory journey.FEVER ROOM has just wowed audiences in Berlin and has been touring since 2014. It is set to amaze audiences in Singapore next. Don’t miss it!The new TheatreWorks Curators Academy is founded by Artistic Director Ong Keng Sen. Figure8 Agency Presents Tinariwen...
Figure8 Agency, in collaboration with Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay, is thrilled to present the Tuareg Grammy-winning sensation Tinariwen in Singapore! Tinariwen is an iconic desert blues band originally from northern Mali, a country which has given the world Toumani Diabaté and the great Ali Farka Touré, among others. Rooted in traditional Tuareg music but influenced by the likes of Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix and Bob Marley, their music addresses political awakening, problems of exile, repression, and sovereignty. The band has become a rallying point for the disenfranchised nation, while helping to garner global interest in desert blues, a hypnotic and danceable combination of blues, Tuareg folk, rock and more. Outlawed in Algeria and Mali, their first two albums found an international audience, and paved the way for a wave of Tuareg desert blues artists such as Bombino and Tamikrest. Their praises have been sung by some of the planet’s most influential musicians—Thom Yorke, Damon Albarn, Robert Plant and Chris Martin, to name just a few.Elwan was recorded between Morocco and Joshua Tree, California, with special guests Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees, Queens of the Stone Age), Kurt Vile and Matt Sweeney (Johnny Cash, Bonnie Prince Billy and Cat Power). This record reaffirms this Tuareg institution as one of the most legendary and influential African bands in recent decades. Elwan has been nominated for Best World Music Album at the 2018 Grammy Awards
